  ...In other ratings news, Russ Martin shows no signs of slowing down as the area's afternoon-drive juggernaut at KYNG-FM (105.3).

What's particularly noteworthy about Mr. Martin's numbers is how they compare to what his predecessor, A.W. Pantoja, was pulling in a year ago.

KYNG-FM's Russ Martin has become Mr. Popular in several area demographics

Among all listeners – the "12-plus" demographic that no one at KYNG thought the station's "hot talk" format would succeed with – Mr. Martin ranked second with a 5.1 share (KPLX was No. 1 at 6.1). In fall 2000, KYNG ranked 26th with a 0.9 share. "The Ticket" KTCK-AM (1310), Mr. Martin's primary talk competition, ranked 12th overall in afternoon drive at 3.3.

Among listeners between the ages of 18 and 34, Mr. Martin ranked first with a 10.5 share. Last fall the station was 20th at 1.3. KTCK ranked 12th this fall at 3.1.

Among men 18 to 34, Mr. Martin ranked first with a whopping 14.7 share, compared to the station's 15th-place 2.0 share last fall. His closest competitor in that demographic was "The Eagle" KEGL-FM (97.1), with a 7.1 share. KTCK ranked sixth at 4.9.

Mr. Martin also ranked first among listeners 25 to 54, men 25 to 54 and men 25 to 49.

Oddly enough, though, Mr. Martin spends much of his time on the air trying to figure out why people are listening.
